Ten Top Hikes - Mainland NS

People regularly ask me to recommend my "favourite" trail. I always struggle giving an answer, partly because I have yet to find one one that stands out so strongly, and partly because features I enjoy, such as steep hill-climbs with views of the ocean, may not be everyone's definition of "favourite". But as people keep asking for my recommendations, here I go with a list of some of those that I consistently enjoy every time I walk them.

For those who want something a little more remote and/or physically demanding, there are these hikes. I have not stinted; all require at least a moderate level of physical fitness, many demand good navigation skills, and every one transports you through a remote area of the province.

  1. In your Hiking Trails of Mainland..., you state that the Thomas Cove trail may not be open to the public much longer. I plan to visit NS in June, and I would like to hike that trail. Is it still open to the public?
