Top Hikes - Cape Breton

Five Family Hikes – Cape Breton (Two hours or less):

Same criteria as the mainland, but on Cape Breton! (The Salt Mountain Trail in Whycocomagh Provincial Park DOES feature a steep climb, but it is a short route and you will find the views from the crest worth the effort. Children manage the climb better than their parents', usually.)
  1. Skyline, CB Highlands National Park
  2. Middle Head, CB Highlands National Park
  3. Louisbourg Lighthouse Trail, Louisbourg National Historic Site
  4. Petersfield Provincial Park, CBRM
  5. Whycocomagh Provincial Park, Victoria County

Five Challenging Hikes – Cape Breton More than two hours):

Five exceptional routes on Cape Breton Island - difficult to decide which ones to include! Tell me your favourites, and why.
  1. Franey, CB Highlands National Park
  2. Glasgow Lakes, CB Highlands National Park
  3. Cape Smokey, Victoria County
  4. Cape Breton, CBRM
  5. Mabou Highlands, Inverness County

  1. In "Hiking Trails of Cape Breton" you indicate that ATMs are allowed on some sections of the Red Island and Point Michaud trails, but do not say which sections. I prefer not to share trails with ATMs, but if they occupy a small section, I would like to hike those trails.
I have a similar question about Coxheath Hills Wilderness trail. Some sections may be used by bikes, but you do not show which sections. Again, if the section was small, I would like to hike that trail.

Any information that would help me plan my vacation would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

  2. ATVs should not be an issue in any of the areas. In the unlikely event that you were to encounter anyone they tend to give hikers a wide berth and to be on about their business.
