For many people, walking or hiking is about the destination. For some it is a particular view, or a special lake. In Nova Scotia, with its thousands of kilometres of ocean coastline, it is the beaches. We have hundreds, from gleaming white sand to rocky cobble, nearly every cove contains its own sheltered area, ideal for a picnic or just a moment of quiet contemplation.
Here are ten beaches that I think are among the nicest in the province. I have tried to spread them out, so you get to visit every region. All these can be accessed with only a very short and easy walk from your car.
i. Point Michaud Beach, Richmond County
ii. Cabot Landing Provincial Park, Victoria County
iii. Main-à-Dieu Shore, CBRM
iv. Merigomish Beach, Pictou County
v. Partridge Island Beach, Cumberland County
vi. Taylor Head Provincial Park. HRM
vii. Martinique Beach, HRM
viii. Crescent Beach. Lunenburg County
ix. Hawk Beach, Shelburne County
x. Mavillette Beach, Digby County
B. Ten “Must-See” Beaches (Effort Required):
Not every beautiful beach in the province can be accessed by highway. Some of the most beautiful, in my opinion, are quite remote and require an extensive effort to reach. A number are found in Wilderness Protected areas or in our National Parks, where they are protected from disturbance.
To my mind, anyone who has visited all these have a good claim to have "been everywhere" in Nova Scotia.
i. Winging Point, CBRM
ii. Fishing Cove, Inverness County
iii. Polletts Cove, Inverness County
iv. Capelin Cove, Richmond County
v. Refugee Cove, Cumberland County
vi. Canso Coastal Barrens, Guysborough County
vii. Hangman’s Beach, HRM
viii. Wolfes Island, HRM
ix. St. Catherine’s River Beach, Queens County
x. Black Point Beach, Shelburne County
