The Books
Hiking Trails of Nova Scotia was first published by the Hosteling Association of Nova Scotia as a photocopied set of typed pages in 1974. The first author was Philip Taylor.
The 9th edition is currently in development, with the fieldwork having been completed in 2011. Hiking Trails of Cape Breton, a volume containing 40 routes on Cape Breton Island, was released in July 2012. Hiking Trails of Mainland Nova Scotia, which will profile 60 additional routes, will be released in October 2012.
A companion volume, Trails of Halifax Regional Municipality, which features 30 walks of 10 km or less located within the boundaries of the HRM, was published in 2010. Together these three books will provide detailed descriptions of more than 130 walking/hiking options and nearly 1500 km of exploration throughout the entire province of Nova Scotia.
Although the current edition will be superseded by the upcoming 9th, at least 20 of the routes in the 8th edition will not appear in the new volume. People with a copy of the 8th edition will be able to find a list in the new edition of what is still usable, and it will be published in this blog.
I am pleased to be able to continue the tradition of providing the public with good quality information about hiking routes in Nova Scotia established by Philip Taylor in the first volume, and extended by the author of subsequent editions, Colin Stewart, and Pam James.
