People regularly ask me to recommend my "favourite" trail. I always struggle giving an answer, partly because I have yet to find one one that stands out so strongly, and partly because features I enjoy, such as steep hill-climbs with views of the ocean, may not be everyone's definition of "favourite". But as people keep asking for my recommendations, here I go with a list of some of those that I consistently enjoy every time I walk them.
For those who want something a little more remote and/or physically demanding, there are these hikes. I have not stinted; all require at least a moderate level of physical fitness, many demand good navigation skills, and every one transports you through a remote area of the province.
Ten Challenging Hikes – Mainland (More than two hours):
- The Bluff Wilderness Trail, HRM
- North Granite Ridge Trail, HRM
- Crowbar Lake, HRM
- Kenomee Canyon, Colchester County
- Gully Lake Loop, Pictou County
- Cape Chignecto Provincial Park, Cumberland County
- Liberty Lake Loop, Kejimkujik National Park
- Cape George, Antigonish County
- Queensport Road, Guysborough County
- Cape Split, Kings County
In your Hiking Trails of Mainland..., you state that the Thomas Cove trail may not be open to the public much longer. I plan to visit NS in June, and I would like to hike that trail. Is it still open to the public?
